The Untold Story of Hastar

Mythological stories are always intriguing to read because they make you wonder if something like this actually happened in the past or is it just a fictitious universe of stories that was created by someone. But I have to admit that certain stories are still so mysterious that it's hard to decide whether it is a myth or reality. There are still a lot of stories that are left unexplained in tattered manuscripts, epics, Vedic literature and Puranas.

The Goddess of Prosperity

I came across one mythological story from a film that got me gripped to it and I thought of posting a small write-up on it because a vast majority of the people don't know about this story yet. So keep reading if you want to know more about Hastar the demon god.

Many people believe that this is a myth that was created for the film Tumbbad, those who haven't seen this film should watch it because it has a good lesson to teach us on greed. According to this film which is set in the backdrop of a small isolated village called Tumbbad in Maharashtra somewhere close to Ratnagiri the myth of this demon god Hastar is that the whole world was created by the goddess of prosperity and she had 16 million children who were all gods and goddesses. Hastar was her firstborn and the goddess of prosperity loved him the most but Hastar was a very greedy and notorious child which is evident from his horrific name, he saw how his mother the goddess of prosperity created gold and grains for mankind, one day he asked his mother to give him control over all the gold in the world and all his siblings agreed to let him have possession of all the gold because they believed that gold is no good and will only push mankind towards greed. Needless to say,  Hastar's intentions were more than wicked when he got his hands on all the gold he soon turned more greedy and tried to lay his hands on the grain and this time all the other gods were furious and all 16 million gods retaliated and attacked  Hastar. He couldn't sustain all that damage he was outnumbered by all his siblings and seeing this his mother felt very sorry for him after all he was her first and the most loved child. She pleaded before all the other gods and goddesses to spare his life and they agreed only on one condition that Hastar would never be worshipped by mankind and his name will be erased from history, hence there is absolutely no evidence in any ancient scriptures about Hastar. The story was only passed on by a family of Brahmins who lived in the village Tumbbad but believing if this story is true or a myth is left up to the people.

Hastar was eventually banished from the world and imprisoned in his mother's womb and he had to live there for eternity and was never to be worshipped.
